The two of them don’t really become friends till the end of ‘A New Hope.’ When Luke joins the Rebellion in the Battle of Yavin, Han Solo hesitates and is set to leave when he has his reward. This is also after some convincing from Luke, who wants to do the right thing and join the Rebel Alliance. Han Solo does everything in this film for the money he takes Obi-Wan and Luke for a fee, and his motivation for saving Leia is due to the possibility of a reward.
